    The census gives us a brief snapshot of various aspects of a population.     In 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880, census enumerators were directed to secure, in addition to the usually required census data, information as to all persons dying within the 12 months preceding the census taking. These lists became known as the "Mortality Schedules". Some online mortality schedules can be searched, free, at this site.

    The Census Bureau provides an "age search" service to the public, wherein the bureau will search the confidential records from the Federal population censuses of 1910 to 1500 and issue an official transcript of the results (for a congressionally mandated fee).
