Anne and Bruce Our club dues is our one big brick wall !!

Looking for family of g.g.grandfather, David Dixon BRIGGS, born about 1832/33 in Rome, Oneida, New York. His family had a cabinetmaking background, and may have been Quakers. David had a disagreement with his father, ran away from home to join a whaling ship and ended up in New Zealand by 1852.

Found a marriage David D BRIGGS to Sarah Ellen EMERY b.6 May 1829; d.Feb. 1850; child from union, in Gorham, Cumberland, Me. But have been unable to find anything more about the marriage or child. Sarah is the daughter of Daniel C. EMERY m. Lucia JORDON of Gorham, Cumberland, Me.

Also looking for family tree info on the actress Virginia BRUCE, whose birth name was Helen Virginia Briggs, born Sept. 29, 1910, to Earll F. Briggs and Margaret Morris Briggs in Minneapolis, then moved to CA. This family may be a missing line of Briggs who moved "west" from NY.

Thanks

Dan Ford My brickwall is my 3-great grandfather Timothy D. Ford. He came to the US from Ireland in 1854 following the potato famine. I'd like to find his originating locale and family in Ireland. Any and all advice most welcome. At the risk of this getting long, he's what I know:

My second annual dues. My 2-great grandmother Ann E. Cowen has a mystery relative. I'm missing a family branch...

The 6 Nov 1919 Evening Record newspaper (Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass.) published Ann's obituary:
The funeral services for Mrs. Ann E. Ford, mother of Dr. Martin T. Ford and a resident of this city for the past 45 years, was held yesterday at St. Rose's church at 9:00 AM. Present at the service was Rev. James Burke, a nephew of the decesased...

I don't know how Rev. Burke is related to Ann. Following is what I know about her and to a much lesser extent him. Any suggestions on what next to try to find James' connection to Ann would be appreciated. I hope this isn't too long...

Ann E. Cowen married Timothy D. Ford on 19 Nov 1868 in Boston, Mass. (Massachusetts Vital Records, 1868, Vol. 210, pg 151). On that document she's listed as 27 years old, for a birth about 1837 (later census records give varying birthdates, par for the course). According to the marriage record her parents were Patrick and Bridget. I have found no good documentation of her immigration from Ireland, but it was probably in the range of 1848 (per the 1900 census) to 1852 (per the 1910 census). I have no data suggesting that Ann's parents did/didn't came to the US too, but if they did then possibly this 1860 census shows the family (Census 1860 Clinton, Worcester, Massachusetts; Roll: M653_530; Page: 620; Image: 148). This family has potential siblings William and Bridget Cowen; I haven't found anything about what became of these two, but it is possible that this Bridget was Ann's sister.

To find Rev. James Burke I started by searching the area around the Boston funeral. I think I found the only good contender: in 1910 James M. Burke was Asst. pastor, St. Paul's church in Worcester (1910 Worcester city directory), priest in the 1920 census, Asst. pastor, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Gardner, Worcester, Mass. (City directory, Gardner, Worcester, Mass., 1922), Pastor, Church of St. Catherine the Marytr (City directory, Northampton, Hampshire, Mass., 1931 and 1932), and Pastor, St. Bridget's Roman Catholic church (City directory, Millbury, Mass., 1938-1939).

For James to be Ann's nephew, he must be the son of one of her siblings of or one of her husband's siblings. I'm pretty darn sure that her husband had 3 siblings (1860 census), only one of whom was a sister and she died unmarried. So I suspect that James is the son of Ann's sister who married a Mr. Burke. I can't find this connection. I haven't been able to find James Burke back further in time so that I can connect him to his aunt. Below are other sources I have, I wouldn't want anybody to waste time duplicating what I have. Ann E. Cowen: 1870 census: Census 1870 Boston Ward 7, Suffolk, Massachusetts; Roll: M593_644; Page: 280; Image: 255 1880 census: Census 1880 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts Roll T9_562 Family History Film 1254562 Page 425.3000 Enumeration District 794 Image 0371 1900 census: Census 1900 Chelsea Ward 3, Suffolk, Massachusetts Roll T623 689 Page 23A Enumeration District 1564 1910 census: Census 1910 Chelsea Ward 3, Suffolk, Massachusetts; Roll: T624_626; Page: 1B; Enumeration District: 1667; Image: 454 James Burke: 1910 census: Census 1910 Worcester Ward 9, Worcester, Massachusetts; Roll: T624_633; Page: 17B; Enumeration District: 1909; Image: 578) 1920 census: Census 1920 Gardner, Worcester, Massachusetts; Roll: T625_745; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 76; Image: 386 1930 census: Census 1930 Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts; Roll: 912; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 38; Image: 984.0 Timothy Ford (before marrying Ann): 1860 census: Census 1860 Boston Ward 10, Suffolk, Massachusetts; Roll: M653_523; Page: 351; Image: 352. Dan Ford
The 1860 census shows Martin Ford, Bridget Ford, William Ford, and our hero Timothy Ford. This is the earliest US record I have of them. Through marriage and death records (from newenglandancestors.org, a great site for Massachusetts research) I've confirmed they are all siblings, parents named Martin Ford and Mary Cavanaugh in Ireland. Census records show they immigrated about 1854. I have found no other documentation of this (passenger lists, etc.) -- gee, you'd think that a set of 4 people coming over together shouldn't be that hard to find but I just draw a blank everywhere I look.

Timothy Ford (b 15 Sep 1846) married Ann E. Cowen on 19 Nov 1868, Boston, Mass. Vital Records, 1868, Vol. 210, pg 151).
William Ford (b Jan 1844) married Joanna Keefe on 18 Nov 1868, Boston, Mass.
Bridget Ford (b abt 1838) died 02 Mar 1878.
Martin Ford (b Apr 1840) married Myra E. Henlon (sp.?) 05 Feb 1883 East Hampton, Suffolk, Mass.

Timothy and Ann had 5 children:
1. Mary Ford, born 23 Dec 1869 in Boston, Mass., died 1871 at 9 Genesee, Boston, Mass. of diptheria.
2. Frederick William Ford, born 13 Dec 1872, died aft. 1915.
3. Joseph P. Ford, born 29 Sep 1874 in Chelsea, Mass., died July 1912.
4. Martin Thomas Ford born 6 Nov 1876 Chelsea, died 03 Feb 1948.
5. Teresa Ford, born 22 Mar 1871, died abt. 23 Dec 1871.
I have lots of details on subsequent generations after Timothy, Martin, and William too if anyone is interested.

I have Timothy in the 1860-1910 census records.

I recently got a copy of Timothy's probate file. Like all the other sources above, it had nothing in it about point of origin in Ireland. Same for his death certificate. I have a newspaper obit, but it didn't even mention Ireland. I have his cemetery records (Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, Massachusetts) -- good info about family relations, but nothing about where in Ireland they came from.

In 1870 Timothy's home address was 9 Genesee, Boston, Massachusetts, and he worked at a restaurant at 14 Tremont. Martin and Timothy lived at the 9 Genesee address for some years, Timothy till at least 1872 and Martin to at least 1875 (Boston City Directories).

I think my next step is naturalization records for Timothy or any of his siblings. I also have some hope of re-connecting with long-lost family branches (from Timothy's siblings) where possibly family lore has preserved our point of origin. Any other suggestions?

Dmmoxon I am looking for any information related to the surnames listed below. Many of my brick walls are with the women in my family tree who just seem to have dropped out of sight. (I'm confidant there is a sleuth among us who will help me to find Carrie Casha Smith's birth and adoptive families!)

See Moxon family information at Moxon.org

Casha Smith, Carrie: DOB 9/3/1860 in Washington, DC. DOD 8/14/1905 in Colton, Riverside, CA. Married William Artemus Perrin 9/3/1880 in Washington, DC. Mother of 8 children, including my paternal grandmother, Grace Lois Perrin Moxon. Took the name of Smith by adoption. Her adopted father was a doctor. He had a son and they grew up together. Family tales say that Carrie's father was a strong supporter of President Lincoln and was a soldier in the Civil War. Carrie's mother & father were French. Her father was killed early in the Civil War and her mother, overcome with grief and in a strange country, became mentally unstable. Dr. Smith was (reportably) President Lincoln's physician and he adopted Carrie when her mother could no longer care for her. Seeking any information on Carrie, her parents, and her adoptive

family. Prout, Albert (or Bert): estimated DOB 4/16/1987. Married Elinor Emeline Chapman of Junction City, Trinity, CA about 1922. Marriage location unknown, but assuming CA, NV, or OR. Died in Tonopagh, Nye County, NV probably in Nov or Dec 1926.

McCartney, Creston Hallett, DOB 6/24/1904 in Red Bluff, Tehama, CA. Married Elinor Emeline Prout Chapman 7/14/1930 in Medford, Jackson Co., OR. Died 10/12/1994 in Redding, Shasta, CA.

Luman, Elsie Louise: DOB 4/27/1884 in Quincy, Plumas Co., CA; DOD 9/23/1957 in Weaverville, Trinity, CA. Married George Phelps Chapman, Jr. in Aug., probably 1901 or 1902. Place of marriage unknown.

Chapman, Jr., George Phelps: son of George Phelps Chapman and Sarah S. Small. Grandson of John B. Chapman & Juliaett Rice. A descendant of Robert Chapman, Old Saybrook, CT. George Jr. was born 8/16/1885 in Junction City, Trinity, CA. DOD is 1/24/1945 in Eureka, Humboldt, CA. Married Elsie Louise Luman, date & place unknown.

Dorothea (ebenordms ) My husband's name was John Sanderson. His great grandfather was C. W. Travis of Fortuna. The Travises migrated to San Francisco in the late 1800's.from Forestell Missouri. His grandmother was Loisa Mars. Her father migrated to SF in the late 1800's as well. He was Charles Mars. Charles was killed by a union mob attack in San Francisco in 1896. Mc Pherson, and his Grandfather was Robert Lulen Travis. His mother was Ora M. Travis and his dad was John Milton Sanderson.
Ora Travis
Can anyone tell me what people did in 1900 to hide a birthdate of a child tht was conceived before marriage. I cannot find a record anywhere of my mother-in-law who was born in 1900. Would they have HAD to register the birth? I do know for sure that it was a before marriage conception.
Ora Travis who lived in Berkeley most of her life. . The Travis family of Fortuna was the paternal side of her family starting with CW Travis of Fortuna who emigrated to California from Benton Missouri in the late 1800's. The Maternal side was Ella Mae McPherson who died during the epidemic of 1919.. The McPherson and Gardner's owned a grocery store in Oakland in the early 1900 on Fruitvale. Ora married John Sanderson of San Francisco, whose father was from England. His mother came from the Mars family, originally from the Boston are. He was a lather. As we all know, just about everyone who died in the last century has a social security number....at least, all those who died AFTER the great depression and most definatly, all those who died AFTER WWII. So WHYYYY is it that I can't find an SS# for my husband's GGgrandfather who died w/in 10 years of 1960 (I'm still working on the eact date)???
I can not find out which of the 2 Abrahams girls he married and when the girls died. I can not find any information out about them. I understand from stories my father told that one of them never married and was a school teacher. But he didn't know that there was a second daughter. Also, he doesn't remember the name of the daughter he met. That would have been his 2nd cousin as his grandfather and her father were brothers.

Jslash831 Braham, Abraham(s), Holland, Handlon, Dougherty and Hinchcliffe.
I have been researching an extended branch of my family tree and gave up because I had not found anymore information that was tying anything together. I received an email from my aunt that gave me a small piece to my puzzle but I need help with it.

GG grandfather, Nathaniel (A)Braham(s) had a sister Mary Ann Abraham (s). She married Thomas Pearce Peacock in the mid to late 1800's in England. I know of atleast 2 children from that marriage, Ada and Eleanor. I recently found out that there was a son, William Peacock. He is listed in the Who's who in 1940's as a chemist. Ada married and had atleast 2 children, twin boys, Ransford and Bill, but her married name is unknown.

My wall is finding him and/or her. My father recalls them living in Newark, New Jersey, Ada and her children and maybe even her brother. I did not find any marriage record in England for Ada so she may have married here in the US. So if anyone can provide me with any information about William and/or Ada I would appreciate it.

2nd Wall: My great uncle Lewis Braham had a son Lewis or Louis Braham. He married in California, his first marriage and had quite a few children and then divorced and married a 2nd time, I think in Las Vegas. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. I do know that he has since passed away in California but I would like to contact any of his children. I do know not how to go about researching the "Alive People" born before 1800's. LOL! Any suggestions and/or tips would help.

Thanks group!!!!! I appreciate everyones help The marriages I am looking for is my great uncle. He married one woman, don't know her name and the supposedly married another woman before the divorce was final. The second marriage was annulled and the children given up for adoption. The only speculation I have is that my great uncle never mentioned the second marriage and there was another man with the same name that lived in the same area.

My great uncle's name was Lewis Braham, born about 1903 in Huddersfield, England under the name Abrahams. His first wife had a child(ren). The second wife had 2 children and his 3 wife had 0 children. He lived mainly in Jersey City but was in the Merchant Marines.
I would like to know if there were any Handlon's in England prior to 1863. GGGmother's maiden name, which I have spelled differently so obviously have been searching wrong family, is Handlon. Her first name is Lydia. She married Lewis Braham in 1863 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. Can you access the UK files? I found a Ledia Handlon in Lancashire in 1861 but I have all ready used the free search on Ancestry. If you can find anything, please let me know.

Any help would be appreciated. I can not locate any marriage certificate except to his last wife.

DRAWDY (DRODDY) This a very large extended family with too many members to list here. Our DRAWDY line is directly from South Carolina and Georgia but would love to compare notes with anyone doing DRAWDY (DRODDY) research. The story of Daniel and Elizabeth Drawdy, the ancestors of several Drawdy lines, has become a tale of family legend mixed with some actual fact. Many of the Droddys, Drodys, and Drawdys of Texas, California, Louisiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida are from the same Daniel and Elizabeth Droddy. The earliest recorded spelling of Daniel's name was Droudy. Descendants of his sons left in Virginia spell it Droddy or Drody. The descendants of his sons who were born in South Carolina generally use Drawdy.

Both lines were in Alameda County in the 1920s and then moved to Mendocino County by the mid-late 1940s. BIANCHI is an extremely common name and they are scattered all over the world, most lines of research that I tried to follow have turned into chasing geese (I'm sure you know what that's like). PAOLI, on the other hand, seems to be extremely rare and has become a several layer thick brick wall (you know that one too). Since Humboldt County abuts Mendocino, PAOLI may be a connection(?), BIANCHI is still anybody's guess.

lynda labar I'm currently working on two brick walls... I've included other surnames I am continually researching. . lots lot learn!!

LaBar/Dethloff side - Biggest Wall:
Looking for information on George and Margaret (nee unknown) LaBar/LaBarr/ LaBarre living in Upper Mt. Bethel, Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1775-1781 when their known four children were baptized at the Lutheran and Reformed Church, Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton, PA.
Children:
Anna Maria (b, 16 Feb 1775);

John George (b. 6 Mar 1779);
and our ancestor, Thomas (b. 20 Apr 1781 - d. 05Jan 1849, Eaton Twp, Wyoming Co, PA).
There are at least 5 George LaBar's in that area at that time - haven't found the right one with wife Margaret and these children.
Family oral history says he was the grandson of Peter LaBar from Alsace to PA in 1730 - might be Peter's son, Jacob's child since I've found that Jacob had 7 children, but haven't been able to learn names/dates.

Stensvold/Johnson side - Biggest Wall:
Looking for information on John/Johan J Johnson, born Finland,12 Jun 1860-died San Francisco, CA 29 Dec 1945; married to Nora Moynahan/Monahan, born County Cork, Ireland 25 Mar 1863 - died San Francisco, CA 16 Apr 1937 -

Mae Smith was born to Louis (Luke) George Smith (parents James Duffy Smith/ Ellen Lennon both of County Louth, Ireland) and Lillie Ann Collins (parents Anthony Collins/Susan Quigg both of New Brunswick, Canada) . -

John/Johan and Nora were living in Eureka, Humboldt, CA at 1900 census, moved to San Francisco, CA abt 1902 and died in San Francisco. 1900 census says they were married for 10 years - and John arrived in US abt 1885 and Nora abt 1889... haven't found immigration info/marriage info or anything on their parents/siblings.

LoriHub My paternal side: Grandfather, Julius Karl Mitchell born abt 1901 in San Francisco. Married and Divorced my grandmother , Beulah Grossman. They had one child, my father whom I don't feel necessary to disclose at this time. Julius and Beulah lived in Los Angeles when married (only about 6 years). I don't know where Julius went after divorce but he may have went back up north. Julius was a radio technician. I've tried for a birth cert on him to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions????

Lynda LaBar I'm new to this group and hope someone might be able to help me with my maternal line or point me towards new options for research - I'm looking for information on the extended families of my grandparents: William Francis Johnson (b 12 Jul 1900, Eureka, CA-d.17 Dec 1967, San Francisco, CA) and Mary Loretta (Mae) Smith (b. 10 Feb 1901, Eureka, CA-d. 21 Mar 1989, Clayton, CA). Mae Smith was born to Louis (Luke) George Smith (parents James Duffy Smith and Ellen Lennon both of County Louth, Ireland) and Lillie Ann Collins (parents Anthony Collins/Susan Quigg both of New Brunswick, CA)

My paternal line is Stensvold - directly from Norway.. I have some information there - The Johnson's are my most difficult brick wall.. can't seem to find anything on ggrandparents John and Nora:

1) I am looking for information on the marriage of John J. Johnson and Nora Moynahan/Monahan (assumed to be in Eureka abt 1890 based on their different immigration dates and different countries of origin as well as marriage info from 1900 and 1920 census records). I am hoping there may be some way to find marriage records. John and Nora were both Catholic so maybe there are some church records that may lead to a marriage license/record. groom: John J. Johnson, born Finland,12 Jun 1860-died San Francisco, CA Dec 29, 1945. bride: Nora Moynahan/Monahan, born County Cork, Ireland 25 Mar 1863 - died San Francisco, CA April 16, 1937

2) and potentially shed some light on their parents/siblings??

3) Looking for birth/baptismal/death record for son, John Edward Johnson - b. 30 Mar 1890-1 -assuming Eureka - died in San Francisco 22 Mar 1907. He is listed on the 1900 census in Eureka with the family. Burial was from St Pauls Catholic Church in SF on Church St and to Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

4) Also looking for any info/birth/baptismal/death/burial records on a daughter, May Johnson b. Feb 1896 - listed in the 1900 census with the family in Eureka but no one ever mentioned her and she doesn't show up in the 1910 census - the 'Johnson family plot' was purchased in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in 1907, it was for the burial of son, John Edward Johnson, who was about 16yrs old. Since there was no mention of May at that time, I am 'assuming' that she may have died in Eureka between 1900-1907. I did find a listing for a Marie A. Johnson, death date 25 Mar 1901 - @ age 5yrs, 3mo, 3da in Eureka.. this could be her - is there any record of a death/burial around that time and if so, would Marie be our 'May" ?? Are parents the same??

5) Also looking for any information about two other children listed as children born to the marriage but not living in 1900 census. Are there records of infants? Maybe a Catholic baptismal/burial record? What would be the local Catholic cemetery in Eureka??

Thank you for your interest. My McClure and Elliott lines were Scots-Irish and came to America in the late 1600s, through Pennsylvania, down to North Carolina for the Elliotts, and the McClures were some of the first settlers in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. By the early 1800s they were in Virginia and about 1825 migrated to Dade County, Missouri. The McClures went first to eastern Tennessee about 1800 and then to Dade County about 1830. There one married a Wetzel girl. In 1845 the Elliotts joined one of the first wagon trains to go to California. The McClures soon followed. After the Bear Flag Revolt they were some of the first settlers in what is now Lake County. Dewell was a young man when he signed on with Elliott as a drover on the trip to California. He later married one of the Elliott girls.

The Betts, was on my mothers line, and originated in Wales and England. The ancestors of Joseph Thomas and Elmira Brown are my brick wall. The 1860 census shows Joseph Thomas as born about 1835 in Ohio, location unknown. The census shows Elmira Brown as born on 22 June, 1834, in Illinois, exact location unknown. The 1880 census shows her father as born in Tennessee, and her mother as born in Kentucky. Joseph and Elmira married about 1851, had four children, and left for California in 1865. One of the children was born on the trail. Joseph died on the trail and Elmira remarried in California.

mel I have been with the group for about 6 months. My brickwall is my Ggrandfather Denslow C. Robbins born in Vermont 1841. No town or county and I have no idea what is father's first name or mother's first name are. On the 1880 census with wife Mary,Ida,Ada,Addie,Ivy. Gives Denslow birth 1831. On the 1900 federal census has Denslow Robbins with wife Mary,Burr,Della,Lulu, and raymond. My ggrandfather Denslow was married twice according to the family and the first wife and most of the children died with one of the plagues that went across the USA. Denslow then remarried and had more children. Delbert Robbins is my grandfather on the 1910 federal census. Not sure how to unscramble this? Also the family said that we have Narragansett Indian blood, where this comes to play I don't know. Thanks, Mel PS I have only been involved in genealogy for 6 mo.Thanks again in advance Mel.

Pat KIVLER - One branch of my Kivler's flew the coop for CA and UT. Dr. Carl Kivler and his with, Naomi Samuel, married in Nanticoke, Luzerne County, PA, Nov. 14, 1936. I'm not sure when they left for UT but he was a prominent doctor in Provo. There are Kivler's in CA that I think are his line. There are also Kivler's in AZ that is related to the same distant family. I have about 250 Kivler's I found, that all began here in northeast PA. Another branch roamed to Indiana. Some to Texas...all over.
QUAIFE - This line I have back to William Quaife, born 1821 in England. Not sure when he immigrated to New York, but it was b4 he married in 1842, and by 1850 they were in Illinois. Their 1 son Frank married Anna Sopko in Illinois about 1916. They had 2 dau's and 1 son, and the son George married Rosemary Bryant Sep, 1946 in IL. Not sure when the 1st child was born but she was born in CA, and this family remained there. There are other Quaife's but I never tracked any of them down, just George & Rose. George died in 2002 and as far as I know, Rose is still living.
These are the only 2 known lines I have in CA. I put the other names out these just in case anybody has rellies with the same name. I have more info on the above, this is just a brief listing.

rehedin I am looking for information about Harvey M. HILL who went to the CA gold rush and stayed. The only record that I have located about him appears on the website: . It is the San Francisco Call Newspaper Vital Rocords for the years 1869 - 1891. According to Record No. 1891D-3077, Harvey M. HILL died in 1891 at the age of 72. I would love to obtain any other information that appears in that record. Does anyone in the group have access to those records?
Samuel Dana HILL was born in Walpole, NH on about the 17th of May in 1821. Two years later his parents moved to Stowe, MA. When he was sixteen years old, he began work in a woolen factory in Felchville, VT, where he learned the trade. He married Eliza Ann GIDDINGS on May 16, 1842. In 1846 he bought the woolen mills, and continued the business for himself until 1849. He came to CA in the fall of 1850 with his brother, George Sparhawk HILL. They arrived at 9AM on Nov 21, 1850, aboard the SS California from Panama. He mined first at Salem Bar, near Mormon Island. In March, 1851, he came to Downieville. His wife, Eliza Ann (Giddings) HILL, arrived in CA on May 23, 1851 aboard the SS Columbus from Panama, and joined him. In 1854, in company with George Webber, he bought the Durgin saw mill. In the following year he sold his interest to Webber, and with Bradburn and Smith built a mill on the South fork, a half-mile above Downieville. In 1858 he resumed mining. In 1859 he located the Slug Canyon quartz-lead, which proved very rich. In 1861 he located the Oro mine, near Downieville. Samuel and Eliza had five children; four of them survived: Nancy Anndelia HILL, Harvey Dana HILL, Florence E.HILL, and Helen Maria HILL. Samuel D. HILL and his wife Eliza remained in Downieville for the remainder of their lives. Sam died on Jan 27, 1901; Eliza died on Nov 24, 1902. They are both buried in Downieville. I have been able to locate considerable information on Sam's children and their families.
Sam's brother, Harvey M. HILL, however, is more of a mystery. I do not know his exact date of birth, but it is about 1819. I don't know if he ever married or had children. I don't know just when he arrived in CA, but he was in Coloma in Feb of 1853, and in San Francisco in April of 1858. He was still in CA in1885 --exactly where I do not know. Since he is listed in the San Francisco Call Newspaper Vital Records, I would assume that he most likely resided in the vicinity of San Francisco when he died in 1891.
Perhaps someone in the club will have some suggestions, or be able to obtain the listing from the San Francisco Call Newspaper Vital Records, and shed some light on this mystery. Thanks in advance. Bob.

RoMagic My great great grandfather Churchill Moss was born in Grayson Co TX in 1844. I have never been able to find him or his family in census or any other records in Texas. The next time I found Churchill was in southern Oregon. I found him in census records, his marriage record and a few other references. I noticed in one census year he was living in Mariposa County, a far distance from Jackson County, Oregon and Siskiyou County, CA. where he and his family had been living. A while back I got to thinking why would Churchill be living way down in Mariposa unless maybe he had family there. So, I looked in thecensus records and in 1860 found a Sarah Calhoun listed as head of the house, with Churchill age 15, Silas and Norman Moss along with Sarah, W R and JohnCalhoun. I am guessing that Sarah the head of the house was the mother, the last three children were from her second marriage...but that is just a guess for now. I haven't found Sarah, the mother anywhere else, nor any of the Calhoun children. I did find an obit for Silas in 1903 Marisposa County, he apparently wandered off and died from exposure. I want to try to get his death certificate in hopes that his parents are listed on it...his brother Norman was mentioned in the newspaper article about Silas's death, so he may have given the names of the parents for the DC. I did find Norman listed with wife Nancy in the census, but that was in 1900 when they were in their 50s, so I dont know if they had children or not. So...anyone have any ideas of where else to look for this family?

teacher mom Here are some of my lines and brickwalls:

Smith: Nevada, Hempstead, and Monroe Co, AR (1890 - 1910)
Simpson: Attala Co, MS, from DeKalb Co, GA (1840-1850)
Noonan: Co. Clare, IRE to Canada to Sonoma Co, CA
Plover: IRE (poss. Co Galway) to NY to Calaveras, CA
Clark: KY to Dent, Shannon, and Phelps Co, MO (1825- 1865)
McMichael: Abbeville Co, SC 1797 to MO to TN
Kerrigan: IRE to Bucksport, ME (1840-1860)

I have more, but these are my main interests at the moment:

Brickwalls:
William Isaac PLOVER. Born in 1836/37 in IRE. Emigrated to NY on the Bark
Clarence in 1855 from Co Galway. I know he was in Calaveras Co, CA in 1861, and can follow him from there, but I'd love to know about how he got from NY to Calaveras, and be able to find him in IRELAND! (Haven't found him in Galway, and have no idea of any other place to look - other than all of Ireland, that is...)

Frank SMITH: My g grandfather who died in either Nevada or Hempstead Co (AR) sometime between 1892 and 1900. His daughter, my great aunt, Blanche Smith (whom I also would love to find after 1910) was born in 1892, so he was alive around then, and his wife was listed as a widow on the 1900 Nevada Co, AR. My grandfather, his son, was born in 1890 in Prescott, Nevada Co, AR, but of course, that census isn't available. There are NO records except census records available for any of the family before my grandfather's marriage record - no belayed birth certificates for my grandfather Walter or his sister Blanche, no marriage record for Frank and his wife, Mary A., and even the census info about Frank (on his childrens' census records) is all over the map. In short, it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I have other Brick walls, but I'll save them for another time...
Thanks for reading this far!

sjeanh55 Hi!! I am sort of new to this group. I haven't posted any of my surnames that I am researching in the CA area. I decided what the heck!!
I am looking for info on Zelma Aileen Snellings. She was born 21 May 1905 in OK and died 7 Apr 1945 in LA County, CA. Zelma A. was 39 yrs old when she died. She never married. Her mom, Mattie B. Snellings died in CA.in Stanislaus County on 10 Aug 1951. Mattie and her daughter moved to CA. sometime after the death of Mattie's husband Robert H. Snellings in 1931.
I have several other surnames that are in California also they are: Williams, Holcomb, Claunch, and Short. Thanks so much!!

spiveyedwards I am researching the family history/genealogy of the following individuals who, with the exception of Rev. Charles Edwards, I am directly descended from. My daughter is directly descended from Rev. Charles Edwards.
ADAMS, Coleman Jr. ~ born about 1813 in VA; died 1894 in Screven County, GA
BRINSON, Maggie ~ born 1870 in Emanuel County, GA; died 1930 in Jenkins County, GA
EDWARDS, Charles Rev. ~ born about 1866 in VA; died ?
FELDER, Russell ~ born 1872 in Osby, SC; died 1918 in Orangeburg County, SC
KELSEY, James ~ born about 1800 in GA; died ?
MURRAY, Reuben ~ born 1859 in Houston County, GA; died 1945 in Schley County, GA
SPIVEY, Charles ~ born 1806 in Schley County, GA; died about 1900 in Schley County, GA

While I have actual or estimated dates of birth and death for some of these individuals, it is 'the dash' that I am missing. As you can see from their dates of birth, most were born as slaves or were first generation descendants of slaves. This makes it somewhat difficult to fill in their life histories [in America]. I hope someone is able to assist me in doing that. Thanks.

EDWARDS, born Jan. 21, 1875 in CA. mother's maiden name: SMITH Died: Sept. 07, 1963 in Santa Clara Co., CA age: 88 It's nice to know there are so many wonderful people out there willing to help and asking nothing in return but thank you. my web page

Teacher_mom Here are some of my lines and brickwalls:
Smith: Nevada, Hempstead, and Monroe Co, AR (1890 - 1910)
Simpson: Attala Co, MS, from DeKalb Co, GA (1840-1850)
Noonan: Co. Clare, IRE to Canada to Sonoma Co, CA
Plover: IRE (poss. Co Galway) to NY to Calaveras, CA
Clark: KY to Dent, Shannon, and Phelps Co, MO (1825- 1865)
McMichael: Abbeville Co, SC 1797 to MO to TN
Kerrigan: IRE to Bucksport, ME (1840-1860)

I have more, but these are my main interests at the moment:
Brickwalls:
William Isaac PLOVER. Born in 1836/37 in IRE. Emigrated to NY on the Bark Clarence in 1855 from Co Galway.

Thanks for reading this far!

thunenj My CA surnames are DUZEL, THUNEN/THUENEN, CONNELLY, BENNETT and TEBBE. I also have a web site at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~thunenj William Thunen lived in Butte Co and is buried in Cherokee cemetery. He was originally from Germany (Prussia) and came to the US in the 1850's. He first settled in Scott Co, Iowa and married Johanna Tebbe. He moved to CA in the early 1860's. William and Johanna had 11 children and there are still quite a few of their descendants living in CA. Johanna Tebbe was also from Germany and came to the US at about the same time as William. I think they were both from the Nordrhein-Westfallen area of Germany.

Tom Knox I have firm documentation on my ancestor (g4-father) Elijah Knox, born 17 Jun 1791, Lyman, York County, Maine, married Harriet Stearns (Harriett Stern) 6 Feb 1820 Burlington, VT, fought in the War of 1812 from 27 Apr 1813 to 26 Apr 1814, wife received a military pension, died 11 Mar 1871 Meaford, Grey County, Ontario.
[[[ refs: 1861+1871 census, 1871 obituary, LDS Family Archive Record,
[[[ plus some Canadian birth records and family notes.
[[[ The STEARNS line goes back to John Stearns (1656/7-1721/2) of MA.

This is where I hit the wall -
The only lead that I have been able to find is FamilyTreeMaker WFT CD#3 family #3338 which shows: Sylvanus Knox born 20 Feb 1759 New England died 9 Apr 1839, married 28 Dec 1786 to Hannah Bunker (1765-1851),
children: James(1787-),
Martha(1789-),
ELIJAH(1791-1871),
Hannah(1793-),
Elizabeth(1796-),
William(1799-),
Silvanus(1)(1801-1803),
Silvanus(2)(1804-),
Mary(1806-)
[[[ No information given for previous *or* later generations.
[[[ And no info given beyond just the birth/death dates.
This *looks* like a match, but I have only this one source, certainly nothing "definitive" like town records or census records, and I have NOTHING further back (from ANY source) on Sylvanus Knox, plus conflicting information on Hannah Bunker (3 different possible sets of parents?!).

Considering the location, Sylvanus *could* be a descendant of "Thomas (Nock) Knox of Dover, NH, in 1652 ..." (book title), but there is a gap of at least one generation that needs filling. AND there were other KNOX families in Maine - but which one? Another bit I'm trying to trace - Elijah's wife Harriet received a military pension. How can I track this down or get any other info on it? I've been looking at the problem for years, and I could be missing something obvious, or new data might have come on the 'net that I haven't found (just how many times do you WANT to hit a brickwall?!).

Tom Knox

whitemoonraven Ok all I don't post much here due to alot of my genealogy is Native American but I have a brickwall that is driving me crazy right now because it is on my mother's side of the family and since I was not raised by my mother and had no contact with that part of the family until I was older it has been very hard going.

My mother is a Thomas. A very poplar name. I have her father well documented with his death certificate, census records, marriage records etc. I also have my great grandfather very well documented, but it is after this that is giving me fits and giggles.

My grandfather was James Sidney Thomas, Jr. b. 10 Jul 1918 d. 22 Mar 1994. He married Ruby Suvonia Mash on 30 Jul 1940. my sources are death certificate, marriage license, 1920 Stone County, Arkansas Census, 1930 Stone County, Arkansas Census. All of these census put him in his father's home. I also have a picture of his tombstone to document his burial place.

My great grandfather was James Sidney Thomas, Sr. b. 20 Jan 1880 Phelps County, Missouri d. 4 Jul 1956. married #1. Pairlee Alzada Moody on 7 Oct 1898 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. #2. Florance Rooney on 24 Feb 1932 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. #3. Addie Powell on 14 Oct 1939 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. my sources are death certificate, marriage licenses, 1900 Stone County, Arkansas Census, 1910 Stone County Arkansas Census, 1920 Stone County, Arkansas Census, 1930 Stone County, Arkansas Census. I can not find him in the 1880 Phelps County, Missouri Census. On his death certificate his father is listed as George Thomas. I still have not been able to prove that the George Washington Thomas that was living in Van Buren/Stone County Arkansas was his father. I have a pretty good idea that it is. His mother was listed on his death certificate as unknown. There is a James S. Thomas listed in the 1880 census in St. Louis, Missouri the right age but the wrong father. There is also in Phelps County a George W. Thomas the right age living in the home of John R. Thomas. The George Washington Thomas in Arkansas named his first son Jonathan "John" R. Thomas. I think I have the right family but I can't prove it without locating this George W. Thomas in 1880 and seeing if he had a son James S. Thomas. If I am correct then the wife of George Washington Thomas is Matilde Caroline "Callie" Higdon. She is on the 1870 Miller County Missouri census living in the home of her Aunt and Uncle Jonathan H. and Ameila A. Wright. I have searched the Phelps and Miller County marriage records and could not find a marriage for her and George but I have his wife listed on several deed transactions in Van Buren/Stone County Arkansas so I know that these two were married. George Washington Thomas that I think was the father of James Sidney Thomas was b. 11 apr 1855 in probably Polk County, Tennessee. He d. 20 Dec 1929 in Lexington, Stone, Arkansas and is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery, Lexington, Stone, Arkansas. He married ca. 1874-1875 to Matilda Caroline "Callie" Higdon. She was b. 17 Feb 1855 in Tennessee. She died 17 oct 1925 in Lexington, Stone, Arkansas. She is also buried at Shady Grove. They had the following children that I know for sure. 1. Jonathan "John" R. Thomas b. Dec 1875 in Phelps County, Missouri 2. Emma C. Thomas b. Sep 1876 in Phelps County, Missouri.Charles "Charlie" Franklin Thomas b. 2 Jun 1882 in Phelps County, Missouri. 4. Mary Ann Thomas b. 15 Dec 1886 in Phelps County, Missouri. 5. Claude E. Thomas b. 16 Jun 1894 in Stone County, Arkansas. 6. James Corbet Thomas b. Sep 1897 in Stone County, Arkansas. George received a homestead deed on 1 Jul 1908 for land in Van Buren County, Arkansas.

I am tearing my hair out trying to prove that this George Washington Thomas is the father of James Sidney Thomas. My largest obstacle is finding the 1880 census that has to be in Missouri showing them with James in the home. There is a 6 year gap between Emma C. Thomas and Charles Franklin Thomas and James Sidney's birth date fits that space in a very logical manner. Also since George Thomas was in Phelps County, Missouri and then moved to Stone County, Arkansas it makes since that this may be the father of my James Sidney since he was the only George Thomas living in the area.

Thanks for listening to me rambling.

Wireman My major surnames are: ENGLANT KESSLER or KESLER BOND HENDRICKS DUKE From what I have so far, my ancestors came from North Carolina area (Carrabus Co.) to TN MO OK TX The reason I joined this California group (& glad to find out other states are OK too) is that my Gr grandfather Ephrim Tom (was called E.T.) was married twice and I believe his first wife may have come to California. I do not know for sure who she was (probably Sarah E. Harkey). He was married to his second wife (Lorinda B Miller) June 6, 1892. From family bibles, I have record of 4 children in the first marriage: Tom W. Englant, b March 19, 1882 Hettie L. Englant, b Jan 3, 1884 Minnie B Englant, b Oct 1, 1886 Bertha B Englant, b Nov 1, 1888 Also from the LDS records, it lists Ephram T. Englant married to Sallie E. Harkey Jan 26, 1881 Dunklin County, Missouri The 1880 Census at Clay, Dunklin, MO lists ET Englant as 'other' in household (works on farm), age 22, single white male. Head of household is S. Jones Harkey, married white male, age 54 with wife, 1 son, & 2 daughters (one being Sarah E. Harkey, age 17).
